Althea Gibson Pictures

Althea Gibson’s trail-blazing tennis career delivered a crushing defeat to segregation. The poor South Carolina girl learned to play championship tennis at recreation and club programs in Harlem, New York. Gibson’s success in the all-black American Tennis Association (ATA) gave her the confidence she needed to pursue the sport. Here, Gibson holds court at Wimbledon, 1957.

Florence Griffith Best Pictures

Greg Louganis' killer nose-dive, Florence Griffith Joyner's wild fingernails, Kerri Strug's ankle--these are some images from Summer Olympics past that will be etched in my memory forever. It's pretty hard to believe that styling could lead one to help create any images that have a part in the Olympics. That's ridiculous. But I kinda did...in a roundabout sort of, but not-really kind of way. Whatever. I love the Olympics. GO USA!

In the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome she became the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field during a single Olympic Games, despite running with a sprained ankle at the time.A track and field champion, she elevated women's track to a major presence in the United States.
The powerful sprinter emerged from the 1960 Rome Olympics as "The Tornado," the fastest woman on earth. The Italians nicknamed her "La Gazzella Nera" (the Black Gazelle); to the French she was "La Perle Noire" (The Black Pearl).

Cynthia Cooper NBA Star

Olympic medalist Cynthia Cooper ‘86 signed on as head women’s basketball coach at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas in 2005, she took over a program that had never experienced a winning season in more than two decades of Division I play. And that was fine with her.
“I decided that this would be a perfect situation for me,” Cooper says. “I’d get a chance to stay at home [near Houston]. I’d get a chance to hopefully try and recruit some of the top talent to a historically black university and turn this program around.”
No one knows more about “turning things around” than Cooper, who grew up in Watts, one of eight children. “I had a lot of negative influence around me, constantly showing me the path that I did not want to take,” she says. “The negatives became my inspiration to really help motivate me to get out of the inner city and out of that environment.” A determined Cooper found refuge and opportunity in sports, initially volleyball and track, then later basketball. Her hard work on the court paid off – with a much-appreciated scholarship to USC.
“I tell people I grew up at USC,” says Cooper, a member of the 1983 and 1984 NCAA championship teams that included phenom Cheryl Miller. “It really opened my eyes to a totally different world, a world that you’re somewhat shut off from as an inner-city kid.”

Pro Cyclists Love Nudity

Usually athletes have a well-built body due to their training routine, thus make them have a different degree of sexiness with their muscular forms. Some athletes are very aware of their beautiful body, and not hesitate to bare it all.

One sport that lot of its athletes love going nude is cycling. We already have two Olympians cyclists, Victoria Pendleton and Rebecca Romero, and Tour de France legend, Lance Armstrong, who already showed their bulky body with no clothes on.

Victoria Pendleton (29) is a British Olympic and World Champion track cyclist. She won the gold medal for sprint in 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. In the same year just before the Olympic Games, she did a photoshoot for The Observer, posed naked when riding her bike.

“Obviously, I was topless but I was wearing a thong and that was airbrushed out. I wouldn’t have done anything provocative.” -- Victoria Pendleton

Something that you might not know, Victoria Pendleton did that because she was inspired by her cycling hero, Lance Armstrong, that did almost the same pose in that very year. 7-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong did the pose for Vanity Fair magazine, that wrote a full story about his comeback plan after almost four years retired.

Lance Armstrong is a true survivor

One more cyclists that done almost the same pictorial was Rebecca Romero (30). She is Victoria Pendleton compatriot, but she started her career in rowing before became a cyclist, where she was a World Champion and Olympic medallist in both sports!

Different from those two cyclists, Rebecca Romero nude photoshoot was not for magazine or newspaper, but for the new Powerade campaign ads. Beisdes Romero, the advertising campaign also features Triple jumper Phillips Idowu and Swimmer Gregor Tait who all posed for award-winning photographer Nadav Kander.
